As some of you know, the Subaru is my first manual tranny car. Tonight, I ran my cousins Evo 9 and got beat by about a car. He jumped ahead when I was doing the 2-3 shift. After that, he wasn't pulling on me, but I wasn't gaining either. The cars are basically evenly matched. I need to improve my shifts, since that seems to be the difference. What can I do to improve my shifts? I feel like I can bang through the gear pretty quickly, but for whatever reason it wasn't good enough.
Give me some tips and tricks on how to improve my shifts...
I know I have more power then him. Admittedly the weakest park of the car is the driver.

never lift off the gas....always worked for me. plus you with a turbo car, you lose a little boost and that could make or break a race

the only tip I can give you is to get more seat time. With more practice by spring you should be even with your cousin's Evo.

make the metal meet the pedal in every gear and don't ever lift. just kick the clucth real quick, and yank or push on that shifter. (depending on what gear change it is).

btw do they make aftermarket shifters for the sti? if so that might help if ya don't have one allready

Just be careful, I heard suby's gearboxes are weak (not sure about sti's). But I know when I shift my right foot never leaves the floor. You also have to match it if your gonna powershift. What I mean by match is... Say you normally shift at 6k and lift your foot, shift at 5,800 and keep your foot on the floor. It takes pratice, and just be glad you have a rev limiter.

Powershiftin is cool and all but it DOES hurt the tranny.

Now I quick shift, its like a mix between a powershift and a regular shift.
Gets the job done.

keep your foot on the gas and throw the shift as fast as you can. When your foot goes down start throwing and come off the pedal quick.

I say just keep practicing. I have always heard that one of the EVO's major weak points is their trannys. Your car should hold up better.

Sorry bro, but it's time to get an automatic....LOL

You need to stop babying the car, and start driving the hell out of it. You have a warranty. Use it...

If you've never done it before, I'd suggest practicing powershifting at nowhere near the redline. Get good at it and you'll only get a couple hundred RPM jump.

Powershifting is a big no no with these cars, both the Evo and the STi. The gearboxes are very fagile. Granny shifting is the only way to go.
The STi does have a shift light, also has a shift buzzer which I happened to have turned off at the time.
And I already have the optional factory short throw shifter installed. It's pretty much the best shifter out there for the STi, you can just upgrade the bushings.
